Wood Joints



Wood Joints:

  • Butt
    • weak
    • plane-on-plane
  • Tongue and Groove
    • Strong
    • Section of one piece (tongue) inserted into indent of another (groove)
  • Miter
    • Slightly stronger
    • Slanted planes give it slightly more strength
  • Rabbet (Not rabbit)
    • Slightly stronger
    • somewhat like tongue and groove, but one side of tongue is exposed
  • Dovetail
    • Strong
    • similar to tongue and groove, but edges are slanted out for better hold
  • Mortise and Tenon
    • One of the strongest
    • Insert of one block inset into another and surrounded on all four sides
  • Dowel
    • Also very strong
    • Similar to Mortise and Tenon, but instead of a square insert, the inserts are round
      • often more than one dowel
